internet-speedMy Friend Rakes Called me and said

“My web page hosted in my new hosting provider is not loading fast like my previous provider. It is slow and sluggish to load. They are cheating me. I am gonna withdraw my hosting service from them”

This is my lesson to him.

In Worl Wide Wep (WWW) i.e Internet, Very critical parametr is Speed. Like a 350 kmph F1 Cars, Higher the speed you get through your ISP more you go crazy, More is the wastage. Can i call it as a “E-Wastage” in real it is a Resource wastage. Mostly internet service providers use a term called concurrency, even though you subscribed for 5 Mbps,It is not dedicated across a globe to every hop. Because they understand the Technology and limitations behind Internet speed.

A Network connection is controlled by TCP (Transmit Control Protocol), Data transfer to the same is limited to TCP window size of 64kBytes. Time taken to reach your hosting provider, and back (latency) limits no of windows that can be tranfered in a second, and hence your throughput.

internet-surfFor example: A latency of 200 Milli second to your hosting server will limit your single session throughput or bandwidth to 2560 kbps. Since the across the globe internet connectivity is through submarine cables latency of this magnitude is normal between continents. Even though your speed availability is 5 mbps, you can not establish 5 mbps connection to every host. Bandwidths are shared, physical mediums are share. After all we share this sphere called Globe, Why not Internet.

Internet Speed available to you from Points across the globe can be measured by running a speed test. It will create virtual TCP sessions and report you the reading. so many websites offer this service, one such web site is http://speedtest.net/

Latency or time taken to reach your domain or Hosting provider can be identified by doing a simple ping from your PC/Server/Device. command “ping yourdomain.com” in linux “ping yourdomain.com -c 3

Certainly internet speed isn’t a Rocket Science. Happy Surfing!

    Well said!

Internet speed is not a rocket science. In fact Rocket science itself is not that hard to understand. The thing is, how much you are willing to learn and share.

The two blog posts in this site, it itelf shows your ability to share your knowledge. I expect a lot from you guys. By the way, Are you guys assiciated with Hexahost? I read about them in blogger forums. They offer a blog hosting plan called Hexa Blogs. I thought may be both the sites are from the same group.

A proverb in the the quarter of Globe where I live “Known is a Drop. Unknown is an ocean”

    Good job guys!!!

Well explined to convey the reality behind the Internet speeds. As a networking specialist i very miuch agree with the assumptions you made to derive this answer.
Speedtest.net is a very useful too to check your Internet service providers link. Often they tend to use over used link and hence your internet speed may be slow during heavy usage time. that can be identfief and test using speedtest.net

Yes Internet is not rocket science :-) , cos it is not one newton theory that drives to go forwards it is the contributions, active participation of humans like us. There are more minds involved in internet than Rocket science.

Precise technical info has been provided to illustrate the speed in internet. I appreciate your interest to provide knowledge to people.
