Directory listing helps web sites to increase organic  and inorganic traffic. Web directory listings is the first and best way to let a search engine crawl through your website. Best maintained directories with proper anchor tag, categorized in correct place is equivalent to a link exchange. There are 1000s of web directories available today to choose from, but not all of them are good to park. By far the most used and popular directory is Dmoz (largest humanly maintained directory). Dmoz is used by some of the other popular directories like AOL, Google, Yahoo, MSN, Altavista, lycos, gigablast, teoma etc. Getting a place in Dmoz is not that easy. Since it is maintained by voluntary editors, If editors of chosen category is so lazy or reluctant to accept your link you are out.

When to Add in Directory ?

As and when you book your domain name start submitting to directories. Beware of fake directory site submitters. Free directories often accept directory listing on exchange of reciprocal link. Having an orphan page created just for directory sites is a good idea. Some directories demand for a particular anchor text too.

Where to add in Directory?

Choose your category based on how that directory is formed.  DMOZ directory is classified based on your site content and hence listing is easier. There are some niche directories available like Internetdir.in where in web sites are listed based on their function rather than what they contain example Blogs, Social Networking Sites, Forums etc. Having your site in a proper place category – sub-category is so important to have search engine and directory surfers attention.

Article Submission

Choosing a directory with article submission option is an added advantage. Not many directories support this feature. Make sure you have important article submitted in multiple directories and back linked to your sites.

Internetdir.in helps in bother article submission as well as in web site listing. It allows you to list any number of web sites and article for one reciprocal link.

It’s very interesting to see what many people write and read about everyday. I never would have thought a blog post would be written about this. Then again I hardly come online. Anyways thanks for the information I really needed this.

Informative post that you have. I came across a new one the other day. They look open for business, but very similar to linkedin.com with more of a social business directory look and feel. Nice clean interface though. Located at SocialTerrain.com
